I’ve been spending time refreshing my Biblical Hebrew lately, and came across some of my notes about the word Shalom that I wanted to share with you.
Shalom is usually translated as “peace” but it means much more than simply the lack of conflict or even a quiet moment with a good cup of tea.
Shalom means:
- Peace
- Completeness
- Wholeness
- Soundness
- Welfare
Thus, it holds within it the fullness of God’s good plans for his people. Dr. Paul Wright (Jerusalem University College) says that we might best understand Shalom in light of Jesus’ promise in John 10:10, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” So, Jesus is the one through whom we have the Shalom of God. It is in Jesus’ self-giving death that all our sin, sickness, and sadness is washed away by His love. It is in His resurrection that we rise to new life with God as complete, whole, and peace-filled people.
May the peace (Shalom) of the Lord be always with you.
Heidi

Charlotte – I will keep you posted. Blessings, Heidi
When I brought a set of dishes, not needed by us, to Family Promise for the family graduating, and a blanket, I left a card. I said I prayed the family would find peace and happiness in their new home. That is what I meant. Thank you for posting this.

Jean – thank you for sharing. Family Promise is such an amazing ministry.
And also with you!
Thank you my friend!
John 10:10 is one of my favorites. To have life and have it abundantly as Jesus would define it is such a loving wish for us. I believe Dr Wright spoke of “shalom” when we visited Israel with you, Heidi. He certainly expanded my concept of its meaning. I always love to be given something that resonates and gives me something to “cogitate on” when learned people talk about Scripture. That lecture was one!
Louise – I’m so glad that the post reminded you of our time in Israel and Dr. Wright’s lecture. He is an amazing teacher. Blessing, Heidi
And so are you, Heidi!
